Child Psychology in Benalmádena

“Affection and bond play a fundamental role in the development of the child’s mind”

Childhood is a period where important milestones in cognitive, physical, and emotional development happen. These are wonderful changes that are always surprising us, especially because of their fast pace. For example, through language acquisition and social interactions, children begin to develop their inner world and understand the outer world and with this, other people also. At this stage affection and bond play a fundamental role in their development.

In childhood, challenges are also faced at the learning level where certain types of behaviors, attitudes, or outcomes are expected in various areas such as family, social, or academic, which can lead to emotional concerns and reactions in both children and adults, which may vary between satisfaction and safety, for example, or anxiety and insecurity.

If you are here, surely there is a boy or girl in your life that matters to you. As experienced Child Therapy Psychologists, we will be happy to assist you in this important phase and address with the most effective strategies your reason for the consultation with a close and playful treatment that facilitates interaction during therapy.

How is Child therapy performed?

Initial Contact

The initial contact is usually with the parents or guardians, either by phone or by written means where you can talk about the reason for the consultation and ask all the questions you might have about it or about us and how we work in Child Therapy. We will be happy to answer all your concerns.

The first session is with the parents since there are issues that should not be addressed in front of the children and we want the first therapeutic contact with the child to be relaxed and playful to facilitate the therapeutic link. In the first session we start the evaluation and we sign a confidentiality agreement where we guarantee that your personal data and the information provided by you is not accessible to other people. A consent that you give us as parents to work with your children is also signed.

Evaluation

A good intervention depends on a good evaluation, since if we fully understand the dynamics of the situation and all the factors associated with it, the techniques will be more effective and therapy will take less time.

With children observation and play are the most effective means to become acquainted but we also apply various types of interviews, questionnaires and psychological tests adapted to the different ages of children that allow us to inquire about specific topics. Some questionnaires and observation records are done at home and according to the case, school context is also evaluated which provides valuable information.

Therapy Information

Once we have fully understood the dynamics of the reason for the consultation, we have a session with the parents or guardians, where we explain the results in detail. It is very important that you understand the situation – which aspects can be changed and which resources we have for it. Objectives to be achieved are set and any questions and concerns that arise can be resolved.

Treatment

Child therapy involves teamwork where parents play a key role in implementing strategies at home. In the session, psychological meetings are based on trust and a therapeutic link through closeness to the child with a playful attitude that allows learning assimilation in a more effective way. Resources are used according to age such as pictures, stories, videos, crafts, breathing exercises and reading to name a few.

Psychological Strategy – We usually work on aspects such as learning to discriminate emotions, regulate them, express them, tolerate frustration, maintain attention, develop social skills, or face fears by exemplifying.

Follow-Up

Once your child has achieved the therapy goals established, there will be occasional meetings where we will value their feelings, whether they are maintaining their achievements or if they need to make any adjustments. These follow-ups are only for a period of time until there is stability in the changes.

Common Reasons for Consultation

Anxiety problems (fears, phobias, stress, nightmares, night terrors), behavior problems (impulsivity, aggressiveness, social skills deficit, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)), academic difficulties, sadness, apathy, insecurity, low self-esteem, food problems, managing higher skills, psychological assessments, and reporting.

    Frequently Asked Questions

To know if my child should see a psychologist, observation is very important, as children generally do not express their emotional discomfort in a very clear verbal way, but important changes in their behaviour can be observed. For example, isolation, irritability, aggressiveness, change in sleep or appetite, avoidance of activities or social situations, fears, bed-wetting, headaches, tummy aches, body aches, without a concrete physical cause or change in academic performance, are often important indicators that something of psychological relevance should be assessed.

In other cases it is the children themselves who express a specific difficulty, for example not being able to sleep, not being able to concentrate, fear of criticism, feeling inferior and it is important to always listen to them and give space to what they are expressing and seeing a psychologist may help to determine what may be happening.

On the other hand, as parents we often do not know how to manage parenting, limits, authority, affection, and this is a good reason to go to a child psychologist to develop parenting skills that facilitate an adequate psycho-affective development in our children.

Child therapy is a space where emotional intelligence is developed through teamwork between the psychologist, the children and the parents, who play a fundamental role.  Therefore, sessions are held with both parents and children.

It is common for children, due to their neuroplasticity and receptive capacity, to develop many emotional intelligence skills throughout the therapy and with it an evident improvement regarding the aspects that are consulted, but also at a general level.

A very important aspect to take into account is that an improvement in our children also implies an improvement and work on our role as parents, as they are aspects that are directly related, which makes child therapy a very good opportunity to learn and improve ourselves.

The objectives that are achieved in child psychotherapy are usually quite evident as they tend to be very specific and children have an extraordinary capacity to adapt and learn, which is why they tend to achieve them relatively quickly, all depending on the complexity of the reason for the consultation.

An important aspect to bear in mind is that children, just like us, cannot and should not be perfect, and that in therapy we should propose realistic objectives that correspond to the stage of development in which they find themselves, for example we are not going to expect the same from a 7 year old as from a 10 year old.

Another aspect that we often encounter is that, for example, sometimes we consult for something very specific such as night terrors, and then we expect that as a result of the therapy focused on night terrors, our children will be obedient, organised, studious, etc. and we may have the perception of no progress, because they no longer have night terrors, but they are disorderly. That is why it is important to take into account the objectives to be achieved and if, once they are achieved, other relevant aspects are to be worked on, generally with issues related to obedience, order, study, the therapy is more focused on parenting guidelines for parents.

There are several reasons for consultation which vary in their complexity but are no less important than others.

The most common problems addressed in child therapy are the following:

Anxiety Problems (fears, phobias, stress, nightmares, night terrors), Behavioural Problems (Impulsivity, Aggressiveness, Social Skills Deficits, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)), Academic Difficulties, Sadness, Apathy, Insecurity, Low Self-Esteem, Eating Problems, Managing high achievers, request for Psychological assessments and reports.

In most cases, medication is not necessary; in child psychological therapy, we seek to achieve psychological wellbeing through the development of emotional, cognitive, behavioural and contextual strategies that allow for adequate emotional management without resorting to medication.

However, there are very specific cases in which teamwork with child psychiatry professionals is required where medication favours the child’s wellbeing.

It is very difficult to predict the exact duration of a psychological treatment because there are several factors to take into account, such as the complexity of the reason for the consultation, the characteristics of the children and their families, and the particular situations of each individual.

However, in child therapy, important results are achieved after 8-12 sessions of intervention.

Psychological therapy sessions at Brilo Psychologists last for one hour; in the case of younger children, the duration may be shorter depending on their attention threshold, which can vary between 40-60 minutes. They are usually held once a week, and as the objectives are achieved, they are spaced out, for example, once every two weeks, and then follow-up sessions are held once every one or two months.
