Teenage Psychology in Benalmádena

«Adolescence allows an intense and inspiring encounter with your identity»

Ingenuity, curiosity, discovering the world with your own eyes, fears and risks, finding security in yourself, the intensity of your emotions, the importance of your friends. Adolescence comes with important physical and cognitive changes that involve constant challenges, the world seems to expect a lot from you, and often it is not easy to meet your own expectations or what is expected of your behavior, training or social life. Although you are not a child, you are not an adult, so vital crises are often present.

In the broad sense of the word, “crises mean changes”; these changes often overwhelm us and can be difficult to manage. However, when we approach them in a proper way they can help us develop the best of ourselves and for this, therapy can be very effective.

As experts in adolescent therapy psychologists, we will be happy to assist you, accepting and without judging you, but with effective strategies to address the reason for the consultation in the best way and with close and respectful treatment where we hope you will feel very comfortable.

How is Teenage Therapy performed?

Initial Contact

The initial contact is usually with the parents or guardians who often seek psychological support – however, in many cases it is the adolescent who seeks this information. From the first contact either by phone or by written means, you can talk about the reason for the consultation and ask all the questions you might have about it or about us and how we work in adolescent therapy. We will be happy to answer all your concerns.

The first session is usually done with parents who usually have a lot to express. In the first session we start the evaluation and we sign a confidentiality agreement where we guarantee that your personal data and the information provided by you is not accessible to other people. Consent that you give us as parents to work with your children is also signed.

Evaluation

A good intervention depends on a good evaluation, since if we fully understand the dynamics of the situation and all the factors associated with it, the techniques will be more effective and therapy will take less time.

From the first evaluation session we want you to feel free and comfortable, we tell you what therapy is and we introduce ourselves, we respect you and listen carefully, we usually ask different kinds of questions to get to know you and when you are ready and according to your needs, we conduct various types of interviews, questionnaires and psychological tests adapted to your age to inquire about specific topics. Some questionnaires and observation records are done at home and according to the case, school context is also evaluated.

Therapy Information

Working with young adolescents means that parents are aware of the most relevant aspects of the therapy – therefore, once we fully understand the dynamics of the motive for consultation, we have a parent/guardian session and another session with the adolescent where we explain the results in detail. They are carried out separately as there are aspects that concern parents more and others to the adolescent more and in this manner an environment of trust and confidentiality is built. It is very important that you understand the reason that led you to consult, which aspects can be changed and which resources we have for it. Objectives to be achieved are set and any questions and concerns that arise can be resolved.

Treatment

Psychological encounters are based on trust and therapeutic link through communication and active listening. Socratic dialog is encouraged where questions open a world of possibilities and foster self-knowledge. We work on thoughts and emotions so they lead you to take actions that generate well-being. We often use resources that are adapted to your interests and way of being, for example reading, videos, music, writing, drawings, or any aspect that is important to you, that adds depth and dynamism to the therapy. We usually work on aspects such as improving self-esteem, developing social skills, managing time well, learning to discriminate emotions, regulating them, expressing them, tolerating frustration, study techniques to illustrate some of them.

Follow-Up

Once you have achieved the goals you established, there will be occasional meetings where we will value how you feel, whether you maintain your achievements or if you need to make any adjustments. These follow-ups will only for a period of time until there is stability in the changes.

Common Reasons for Consultation

Anxiety, depression, behavioral problems (impulsivity, aggressiveness, social skills deficit), sadness, apathy, insecurity, demotivation, low self-esteem, addictions, food problems, academic difficulties, managing higher skills, psychological evaluations, and reporting.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Adolescent therapy is a space that gives the opportunity for expression and to work in a close and secure way.  Diverse psychological aspects of this stage can affect quality of life.  We use evidence based effective therapeutic techniques adapted to each individual case.

Even if there is no specific problem, aspects such as social skills, emotional intelligence and problem-solving strategies among others can be developed, and are consulted when there is a need to improve a specific skill.

From our perspective, adolescence is a very important life stage because of the many changes – biological, emotional, cognitive and environmental demands can give rise to many questions and very intense sensations that are sometimes difficult to manage. At this stage, very important pillars of personality are founded and can be decisive for emotional wellbeing in adult life.

We talk about everything important to the adolescent and about aspects that are also important for the family.

In psychological therapy we address all those aspects that come together and make us up as a person: thoughts, emotions and feelings, the reactions of our body, the actions we take and the context. The idea is to observe and understand how these aspects interact and can generate psychological well-being or discomfort. Recurrent themes include: self-esteem, shyness, anxiety, impulsivity, sadness, frustration, sexuality, academic performance, friendships, social relationships, family relationships, time management, psychoactive drug use, social skills, limit setting, assertive communication, to name a few.

Generally adolescents ask for help and parents propose the option of psychotherapy.  If this isn’t the case, it is very important to observe any significant changes in behaviour.  Relevant indicators are, isolation, difficulty sleeping, changes in appetite, changes in social and family relations and within the family, constant sadness, intense worries, changes in academic performance, apathy, irritability.

Although it is normal in adolescence to have more intense emotional reactions, as well as an important change in, for example, the interest in sharing time with parents, if the aspects mentioned above are constant and significantly alter the quality of life of the adolescent and the family, it is very important to address this.

If your child does not want to come, it is important not to force them, as therapy requires willingness. However, you can encourage them and for example propose to try a session to see how they feel; in our experience, they usually want to come back after the first session as they mention that they feel listened to, accepted and supported in a therapeutic space.

A very important aspect is that in therapy with adolescents, the participation of parents is fundamental, we work as a team and there must not only be an effort and willingness on the part of our child, but also on our part. In this way, if our child does not want to attend, we as parents can begin to consult, and evaluate if we can work on aspects that help our children even if they do not attend therapy.

The price of a session of adolescent therapy is 70€.

Sessions last one hour.  The duration of the therapy depends on the reason for the consulation, personal and contextual factors which make it very difficult to pinpoint an exact length.

However, important changes are usually perceived after 8-12 therapy sessions.

The first session is usually with parents where the problem is identified and important aspects of the context and development begin to be assessed. The following ones are usually with the adolescent.

Occasionally there are sessions with parents, for example to address relevant aspects found in the assessment and to give therapeutic guidelines as well as to resolve doubts and assess the evolution of the therapy.

Depending on the case, there are times when it is beneficial to have sessions with the adolescent and significant others such as parents or other people who may be relevant to the intervention.

Generally we consider adolesence to terminate at 18 years old, however in reality, adolescence covers a wide age range, often beyond legal age.

All psychological treatment of both adults and minors is strictly confidential unless ordered by a court or if the life of the client or another person is at risk. In the case of minors, relevant information should be shared with parents or legal guardians.

In adolescents under the age of 18, information related to the main problems and strengths found in the assessment, as well as progress in therapy, is shared with parents or legal guardians, especially when parenting guidelines are given as part of the therapeutic process. However, privacy is maintained and the trust placed by the adolescents is protected. For example, if a very sensitive and personal aspect that generates anxiety in the adolescent is discussed in therapy, parents are told that there is anxiety but not necessarily those intimate details; if it is considered important to express them with the family, the adolescent will be encouraged to do so with the tools that are developed during therapy.

In adolescents of legal age, even if parents have requested psychological intervention, all information is confidential and psychologists cannot share it with parents without the adolescent’s consent. However, when parental involvement in the process is important, adolescents themselves often ask to be involved and share information that they consider important.
